COMPLETE STEP BY STEP WINDOWS 8 INSTALLATION SCREEN SHOTS


Step 1:
The first thing you should do is head to http://www.techspot.com/downloads/5330-windows-8-release-preview.html and download the installation image for your chosen architecture. The image used in the creation of this guide is the 64-bit (x64) ISO.

Step 2:
Using NERO burn the .iso you downloaded to a DVD.

Step 3:
Before you go any further, ensure all important data is backed up in case of data loss on your drives. This guide assumes you have media backups of your hard drives and you are safe to proceed.

Warning: Installing another operating system without first ensuring you have backups of your current files and operating system is a big risk. If you have no data to lose or you’ve backed up important data, you’re ready to proceed. YOU are responsible if you lose data.

Disclaimer: It goes without saying, that neither me or TechSpot accept any liability or responsibility for any errors or damages made to your computer during, or after installing this operating system. It is up to the user to ensure proper backups are made of important documents and files.

Step 4:
Ensure you have a network cable connected, restart your computer, and boot from the DVD drive.

Step 5:
The DVD will begin to load up, and you'll be presented by the following screen as the installer starts.

Step 6:
Once loaded you will see the following screen.

Select your location, keyboard and regional language settings as required and click "next" to continue and you'll see the following box:

Click "Install now" to continue with the installation.

Step 7:
You'll then be asked to provide the product key to activate Windows.

Enter the product key as written in the screenshot above. For the sake of clarity, the product key is TK8TP-9JN6P-7X7WW-RFFTV-B7QPF for both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions.

Once you have entered the product key, click "next" to continue to the next step.

Step 8:
Before you can proceed with the setup any further you're required to accept Microsoft's license terms, as below.

Read the terms, and once you're happy, tick the "I accept the license terms" box, and click "next" to continue to the next step.

Step 9:
You will be greeted with the following screen.

For the purposes of this guide, we'll assume you are performing a fresh installation of Windows 8 Release Preview. Therefore, this tutorial covers the "Custom" option which will install a fresh copy of Windows 8 Release Preview onto a clean hard drive, without backing up and restoring any existing files or settings.

The first option, "upgrade" will allow those running previous versions of Windows to upgrade to Windows 8 whilst keeping all files, settings and applications during the setup of the new operating system.

Step 10:
The setup will then continue and start the disk manager as below.

Select the correct drive to use for the installation of Windows 8 Release Preview, and click "next" to continue. For those trying this in a Virtual Machine, 20-25GB of hard drive space is more than adequate.

Note: This step is the last point in which you can abort the installation without permanent data loss to drives. Please ensure you have working backups before proceeding further.

Step 11:
Windows setup will then begin to install Windows 8 Release Preview to the hard drive, and will work through several stages as detailed below.

The installer may restart during the installation stage as it configures the computer to run the new operating system.

Step 12:
Once complete, it will reboot again and setup the computers devices and finalize the installation, as below.

Once this stage has finished, you will be greeted with the following screen.

Select your preferred colour scheme for Metro, and then name your computer. The PC name is used to identify the computer on local networks and ideally should be named so that other users your network can identify who the computer belongs to. Then click "next" to proceed.

Step 13:
You will then be greeted with the following window.

At this point you can specify the final settings required in the configuration of your new Windows installation. You can either choose "use express settings" or click "customize" to change the express settings.

If you are unsure, it is best to choose the first option. The installer will then configure the final settings and move onto the next step.

Step 14:
The next step asks you if you wish to sign into your PC using a Windows Live account.

Unlike previous versions of Windows, Microsoft's new operating system heavily integrates the Redmond-based firms Windows Live features, including messenger, contacts, calendar and mail.

Signing in using your Windows Live account also offers Windows 8 users additional benefits like the ability to download additional apps from the Windows Store and automatic synchronization of all your Windows 8 computers so they look and feel the same regardless of which one you're using.

Note: Your Windows Live ID also becomes your username for Windows 8 Release Preview, and uses your Windows Live ID password to log in.

Enter your Windows Live ID, and click "next" to continue.

You will then be asked for your password for your Windows Live account. Click "next" to continue.

The final step of integrating your Windows Live account with your new installation of Windows 8 Release Preview requires you to provide additional verification information. For those that have previously set this up, the fields will be completed already. Verify they are correct, or add the required information and click "next" to continue.

Step 15:
Windows 8 Release Preview will then complete its final configuration.

Once complete, it will then boot into Windows for the first time, as below.

Installation is now complete, and you can enjoy your new OS and begin exploring its features.

Gmail

GMail offers access via IMAP and POP3 but you must first enable this. To do this, logon to your Gmail account and press Settings at the top of your screen. In the new page that load click "Forwarding and POP/IMAP".

Don't set Outlook to save the sent items in the Sent Items folder of the IMAP account or you'll end up with duplicates. When you send via the SMTP server of Gmail, then your Sent Items are automatically placed there. If you are restricted to using another SMTP server (from your ISP for example), then you would still need to configure your account to save to the Sent Items folder.

Visual Studio 2008 Standard Edition on Windows XP Pro SP2.  You may want to try the ‘lite’ and free version of VS 2008, VS 2008 Express Editions. There is also a trial version for VS Professional Edition. If you are student, then you can try downloading free versions for most of the Microsoft products through the DreamSpark, however this opportunity currently is limited to several countries only.
Any pre requirement prior to the installation will be checked and verified by the setup wizard. You need to have the VS 2008 DVD. Insert the DVD into the DVD drive, the Autorun will be executed, displaying the following Windows form. Click the View ReadMe button to read the readme information. Then click the Install Visual Studio 2008 link to start the installation.

The setup wizard will start copying needed files into a temporary folder. Just wait.

In the welcome setup wizard page you can enable the tick box to send your setup experience to Microsoft if you want. In this case we jest leave it unchecked. Just wait for the wizard to load the installation components.

The setup wizard will list down all the required components need to be installed. Any already installed components will also be mentioned. Notice that VS 2008 (version 8.x) needs .NET Framework version 3.5. Key in the Product key and accept the license terms. Then click the Next button.

In the installation type, as usual we have three choices: Default, Full or Custom. In this case we select the Full installation type and accept the default installation path given. You can change the installation path and the required space for every installation type also displayed when we select it.

You can log in using single-user mode and create a new root password.
To enter single-user mode, reboot your computer. If you use the default boot loader, GRUB, you can enter single user mode by performing the following:
  1. At the boot loader menu, use the arrow keys to highlight the installation you want to edit and type [A] to enter into append mode.
  2. You are presented with a prompt that looks similar to the following:
    grub append> ro root=LABEL=/
    
  3. Press the Spacebar once to add a blank space, then add the word single to tell GRUB to boot into single-user Linux mode. The result should look like the following:
    ro root=LABEL=/ single
    
  4. Press [Enter] and GRUB will boot single-user Linux mode. After it finishes loading, you will be presented with a shell prompt similar to the following:
    sh-2.05b#
    
  5. You can now change the root password by typing
    passwd root
    
    You will be asked to re-type the password for verification. Once you are finished, the password will be changed. You can then reboot by typing reboot at the prompt; then you can log in to root as you normally would.

Configure Windows 2003 as a Terminal Server

Open the ‘configure your server’ wizard from Administrative Tools and in the select a role section, choose Terminal Server and click Next twice to confirm your actions. The wizard will then start to install the required files and warn you that the machine will have to be restarted during the installation process. Close any open programs and click OK.
The installation will continue for a few minutes before the machine is restarted. After the machine has booted and you logon, you are presented with a confirmation screen that states the computer is now a terminal server.
It is important to take note that a 120-day evaluation period has been allocated for unlicensed clients. If you do not obtain a license within that period then terminal services clients will no longer be able to initiate a session.

Licensing

This is probably where the most changes have been made. Microsoft have introduced a ‘per user’ license to add to the already familiar ‘per device’ method.
To make your machine a terminal server license server you will have to install it separately. This can be done from the windows components wizard section in the add/remove window from the control panel.
Once you have installed this option your server will be listed in the terminal server licensing console.
You will have to activate the server before it can start distributing licenses. Activation of the licensing server can be done via a direct connection to the internet, a web browser or over the telephone. The following is a screenshot of the terminal server licensing console demonstrating what you would have to do to start the activation process.
This will bring up a wizard asking you to enter details and select options to suite your needs.
Follow the on screen instructions and press Finish when you are done.

The two main applications used to configure the terminal server are:
(They can both be found in the administrative tools folder in control panel or on the start menu).
  • Terminal Services Manager (completely re-written in Windows 2003)
  • Terminal Services Configuration

When you select the server name you can choose to view and manage the Users, Sessions or Processes tab. The green icons indicate that the server is online. If you had to disconnect it, the icons would be gray.
The Users tab allows you to see who is connected, how long they have been connected and the state of their connection. If you select a user and right click you can disconnect or reset the user’s session, send a message (which will be displayed as a pop-up message box on the client side), view the status or log the person out of the terminal server session.
The Sessions tab permits the viewing and control of the terminal server sessions. You can right click a session and select the status to see the incoming and outgoing data or reset to reset the session.
The processes tab shows all the processes that are running and which user they belong to (this is a simplified version of the processes tab found on the windows task manager).
Select a user, click the right mouse button and choose ‘end process’ to kill the process.
The image below shows the Terminal Services Manager with an active connection initiated by a user (andrew).
If you select the RDP-Tcp#12 (username) option you can view the processes and session information specific to that user. Note: The #12 number will be different for each session.
‘Favorite servers’ will list all the servers that you have added as a favourite - you can do this by right clicking a server and selecting ‘add to favorites’.
You are able to connect to multiple terminal servers by press Actions > Connect to computer. These will be listed in the ‘All Listed Servers’ node.

The screenshot below is that of the Terminal Services Configuration.
Any connections that have been setup will be displayed in the connections part of the console. Double click a connection to open the properties page.
The following table will describe what actions you may take on each tab.

The server settings section enables you to modify the settings of the server. Double click a setting from the list to bring up the appropriate window and be given the option to make a change.

Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 Portal

Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 Portal: 

In this post, I'll demonstrate with words and screen shots how to install and get working a portal using Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007.  Installing this product is not difficult, but it does require some forethought and planning.  You can use this post as a reference for getting your version of MOSS 2007 installed.
You need to have downloaded the software from Microsoft's site.  For information on how to do that, please go here.  Once you have registered and downloaded the software, you're ready to start.
First, you'll need Windows 2003 Server, fully patched and ready to go.  I believe I've seen blog postings recently that indicate that you can install MOSS07 on a Vista server.  I'll leave that discussion for other threads and posts.
Once you have the operating system ready to go, you'll want to start by running the setup.exe for MOSS 2007.  Figure 1 illustrates that after you start the installation process, you'll need to enter a valid product identification key code.  This key code can be found on the download site and should have been a part of what you did to get the software in the first place.

After entering the product identification key code, click Continue.  The next screen is the licensing agreement screen.  Now, I always recommend that you read the licensing agreement since it is a legal document and you are bound by its' terms.  But I also recognize that in the 10+ years I've been in this industry, I've never seen an agreement that I didn't agree with.............if you get my drift.

Be sure to select the "I accept the terms of this agreement" check box and then click Continue.
The next screen will give you the chance to select which type of installation you wish to commit.  The Basic installation is used for those who:
  • Need to install everything on a single server
  • Do not need to grow into a multi-server farm
  • Need a quick, easy deployment during installation with lead administrative effort
The Advanced option is selected by those who wish to install MOSS 2007 selecting some of the customizable features.  In this illustration, we'll select the Advanced option and follow that route.

After clicking on the Advanced button, you'll find that the selections default to StandAlone (Figure 4).  However, we'll choose Complete.  The meaning of the three options is as follows:
  • Complete:  Enables all of the options for one server to offer the entire range of MOSS 2007 services and features to the network.  You can scale out this deployment, start and stop services on this server and use a SQL server to host your databases.
  • Web Front End:  Enables only those options that allows the server to run as a web front end server.  What this means is that server is merely the entry and exit point (or one of them among the other WFE servers) for the farm.  The actual servers that users will consume will be hosted on other servers (presumably).  This cannot be the first choice of a farm unless you plan on installing other servers in the farm to offer the services and features that users will want to consume.
  • Stand-Alone:  Similar to complete, this option enables all of the services and features for the MOSS 2007 farm, but assumes that there is no SQL server, so the MSDE engine is installed locally on this server.  You cannot scale out this server into a larger MOSS 2007 farm.
Note that in reality, all of the MOSS 2007 binaries are installed in all three choices.  All these choices really do is (pragmatically, not technically) turn on and off the code that is required for the server to fulfill the functions that have been assigned to it.   Note also that you can select the location where the binaries should be installed in the File Location tab and then sign up to give feedback directly to Microsoft if you'd like to do this.
Make your selections, then click Install Now.

During the installation, you'll be presented with a status bar that is illustrated in Figure 5.

After installation has completed, you'll be given the chance to run through the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard (Figure 6).  You'll use this wizard to commit the initial configuration options for your new SharePoint farm.

One you start the SPPT wizard, you'll receive a pop-up box (Figure 7) that will inform you that certain services are going to be stopped.  Be sure it is a good time to stop these services before moving on with the configuration options for your farm.

The following set of screens in the SPPT Configuration Wizard are design to help you setup the farm.  In Figure 8, you'll be able to create a new farm or join and existing farm.  Farm membership, at the server level, is determined by which servers are using the same configuration database in SQL and which servers are not.  In my illustration, I want to create a new farm, so I select the "No, I want to create a new server farm" radio button.  If I had wanted to connect to an existing farm, I would have selected the other radio button.

After making our selection in Figure 8 and then clicking Next, I'm taken to the next screen illustrated in Figure 9.  On this screen, I can enter the following configuration values:
  • The SQL database server name.  I'm not clear if this is the host name or netbios name, but I suspect this is the host name.  However, you don't need the FQDN here, but you do need name resolution to this server or SQL Instance.
  • The farm configuration database name is needed in the next input box.  Note that the screen just asks for a name, but you need to understand you're entering the most persistent database name for the entire farm - the farm configuration database name.  Be sure this name supports your database naming convention.  You should decide the name of this database in advance of getting to this screen
  • The database access account will need to be a member of the local admins group on each SharePoint server along with having db_creator and db_security permissions in SQL.  I would suggest you have an account setup just for this purpose in your Active Directory and that you have a strong password associated with this account.

in Figure 10, you'll be asked to decide which type of security settings you want to use for your farm.  First, you can specify a pre-selected port number for central administration to run on or you can allow the wizard to randomly assign a port number.  As you can see, this instance of the wizard randomly selected 17386 as the port number for Central Administration (CA).  If you want CA to run on a different port, then select the check box and enter the desired port number.
The issue of NTLM vs. Kerberos is one that you may at some point wish to consider.  Do you want the CA application to run using NTLM (NT Lan Manager) for security authentication or Kerberos?  If the latter, there are some special configurations you'll need to complete for your Active Directory (AD) before Kerberos will work.  I'm finding that most administrators are happy with NTLM, though those in a larger and more secure implementations are increasingly using Kerberos.  For purposes of my illustration here, I'm selecting NTLM.

After you click Next, you'll be given a status bar that indicates how the SharePoint configuration is going.  Depending on the type of server you're installing and the options you're installing, you could have as few as seven tasks or as many as eleven.  Figure 11 illustrates the progress screen.  Note that the caption below the status bar will inform you about the configuration actions that are being executed during this process.

After the configurations have been executed and committed to the SQL Server database, we finally get to CA where we can further configure our farm.  We can start and stop services (Figure 12) on this server and then create web applications.  In order to have portal, you'll first need to start the Office SharePoint Server Search service and then create a Shared Services Provider (SSP).  I'll start the search service.

When the search service is started, you're presented with another web page for search configuration administration that needs to be completed before the search service can start.  The configuration options are pretty clear.  Out of the shoot, you'll use this server for both indexing and servicing queries from users until you can get enough servers in your farm to quarantine those options in your farm.  Select a location that has enough disk space for your indexes.  You should plan on a space allotment of 20% relative to the amount of information you wish to index.  You'll also need to input an email address, a service account and whether or not there is a dedicated WFE for all crawling activities.  For now, in my illustration, since this is the first server in the farm, I'll accept the defaults and click OK.

After starting the search service, the next thing I need to do is create a SSP.  In order to do this, I'll navigate to the Application tab in CA, click Create or Extend a Web Application, then click Create a New Web Application,  then make the configurations necessary that you see in Figure 14. Most of this is pretty self-explanatory, so I won't go through each input in detail.  Suffice to say that I've done two things not illustrated here.  First, after creating this web application, I then web back into CA, selected the Create or Configure Core Farm Services, then selected New SSP (Figure 15) and then filled in the configuration information for the new SSP.  All of the options on that page are self-explanatory, except that you must select an Index server for the SSP to operate.
Backtracking just a bit, you can't have an Index server unless the Search services is started.  So, that's why I illustrated starting the search services first, then creating an SSP, then creating a portal.

Once the SSP is created and the web application for the portal has been created, you can then create the portal.  The way to do this is to navigate to CA and then click Create Site Collection.  Be sure the http://portal is selected in the drop down list in the upper right-hand portion of the screen (Figure 16).   Note that on this screen, you'll need to ensure that you are creating the site collection at the root by selecting the "Create Site at this URL" where the URL path is "root", not in the Sites managed path.  Also, if you scroll down, you'll need to select the Corporate Intranet Site under the Publishing tab.  Microsoft has renamed the Portal to Corporate Intranet Site and placed it under the Publishing tab for web content publishing purposes.  BTW, even though I don't illustrate it here, be sure to give the site a title.

Below I show the steps to install SQL Server 2008 R2 Express.
1. Launch the package, you will then see the contents extracted to a temporary location.

2. SQL Server Setup checks to determine pre-reqs are installed. If not, you will be prompted to install.

3. The Installation Center will then launch. Click on “New installation or add feature to an existing installation” to start the Installation Wizard.

4. Accept the license terms.

5. Review the features to installed and where SQL Server will be installed. Make any changes that are necessary for your environment.

6. Review the Instance Name and change if necessary.

7. Review the credentials that will be used for the services that will be created.

8. Review the Authentication Mode and the administrators that will be added to the Database Engine.

9. Review the Error Reporting settings. We encourage you to keep this option checked, as we review the product feedback on an ongoing basic.  This helps us to continually improve SQL Server.
